I am not the most knowledgeable person on creating cosmetics, but I’m pretty careful about my skin, thus, yours.
Two percent of the population is allergic to potassium sorbate. This is commonly used as a preservative. Potassium sorbate is usually used in lotions and stuff for the face.
Before I knew I was allergic, I used a sample of a face crème from a local company. I turned into a strawberry, complete with welts. Samples are not required to have ingredient labels on them, so I had no clue what was in it OR what caused it.
The second time, I had a body lotion from a friend who I know makes good products. I took a shower, got out and used it all over my body. ALL over my body. What I couldn’t reach my then-husband did. Only one spot remained untouched, somewhere on my back.
Imagine my surprise and pain when my body felt like I had a sunburn. I turned into a red, welted mess. I hurriedly got back into the shower, but the damage was done. My pores were open when I got out of the shower the first time. There wasn’t much I could do. I couldn’t think very well on what to apply and he wasn’t any help. J
The ONLY ingredient I had never used and didn’t know of in that product was the potassium sorbate. At that point I knew my reaction was from that ingredient.
I later learned at a trade show that 2% of the population is allergic to it. I am one of them. PS is also used in great amounts in the food we eat. I would guess, but do not know, that is what made me sensitive to it? Whatever, I now read labels carefully.
And you will find I am pretty careful about what ingredients go into Blue Sage Naturals’ products. Sometimes less is more and sometimes more is better. And almost all the time herbal is the best.
That said, I am looking at incorporating some new ingredients into an eye product and facial product to tighten up these lines! Everyone loved the Firming Eye Gel, but the gel part was a problem. I will try again with that. It worked very well for me too.
So, I went looking at a company that produces ‘natural’ products. I’m getting to where I’m getting tired of making it ALL myself. So you know me, I have lines now. [why has it come as a shock? I AM 59]. I want a line tightener upper. So I go look at this place. All the ‘anti-wrinkle’ stuff they have has potassium sorbate in it. Some have butylene glycol. When I asked the director of ops if they make any products without it, she said she has ‘no way of finding out what ingredients are in what product’. She tells ME to look through every product I’m interested in to see.REALLY?
REALLY? You are too lazy to get off your butt and look for a potential customer? EVERYONE has to keep records of all this. And you are a private label manufacturer Susan Flatau?
Ok, ok. It really ticked me off though. So, I will probably make my own again, I just have to learn how to make a better gel. And you won’t get potassium sorbate, parabens, formaldehyde, butylene glycol or marketing hype.
Unless YOU want me to make something else? If so, what?
